Not MOST as in most of the population, but most compared to other northern states. For purposes of convenience VA, FL, KY, WV, OK etc will be called Southern. Has there been a poll/survey done? Just my first thoughts would be:

I do know there is a slight trace of the southern accent in Pennsylvania. Perhaps some old timers living in the Alleghenies. Don't forget Southern migrants too.
But, the tops are Missouri, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia (in the northern half of the state which is not southern), Indiana, Oklahoma (if you don't consider that southern) and of course Delaware

Eastern New Mexicans are like Eastern Texans; very strong drawl, religious, conservative. NM is often associated with Native Americans, but like Wyoming it's also very cowboy.
I should have said non-southern states, not just northern states.
I'd say mostly everyone in OK considers themself Southern, maybe except for the people northwest of Oklahoma City, and the OK Panhandle. I have family that lives east of Tulsa, near Arkansas & Missouri, they are more Southern than most people I know here in TN.
People in the lower 1/3rd of MO probably consider themselves Southern. Maybe a few people in St. Louis & Kansas City too, but not many. I'm not sure about Columbia & Jefferson City. They seem country, could be slightly Southern, I dunno.
For whatever reason people from Virginia and West Virginia actually believe they're southerners, but whatever.
Well, I was born and raised in southern West Virginia. The legal name on my birth certificate is "Bobby Lee", like by dad's. My great grandfather, born 1863, was John Stonewall Jackson Overby. I grew up on sweet tea, biscuits and gravy, chicken & dumplings, cornbread & beans, okra and hominy. My relatives in the Confederate army put Chambersburg, PA, to the torch, they were part of the largest Confederate cavalry brigade at Gettysburg (which was from WV), they stood on the bridge before Lynchburg, VA, and kept Gen. Hunter from burning it. In gratitude, the citizens of Lynchburg gave Gen. McCausland, of Mason Co., WV, a gold sword. I hope I've explained it clearly why some West Virginians still think they're southern. Don't seem that unreasonable, now, do it?
