The center of Silicon Valley and the center of orange county. Neither has a distinguishable skyline and both are very well off suburban type of cities. Which one do you prefer in terms of shopping, nightlife, culture and amenities?

I have never been to Irvine, so I can't speak for it. I am not even familiar with it.
But I have been to San Jose countless times, and I have family there. So I'm going with San Jose, simply because I have someone there to guide me on things about the city, and show me the night life, culture, and amenities. I have been to a club in the Silicon Valley area, it was fantastic. San Jose has all the big city amenities that any ordinary people could want, and culture is pretty mixed since it's got a lot of foreign born population. Not much of a shopper, so I can't say, lol.
My other cousin who lives in Los Angeles knows nothing outside of the actual city of Los Angeles, she recently moved there 2 years ago... so I can't count on her for anything. I know more about Los Angeles than her, lol.
San Jose actually has a real, walkable downtown with a lot of bars and restaurants to choose from. It also has a light rail system. As far as I know, Irvine has no downtown or even single a walkable neighborhood to speak of. There is no rail transit anywhere in Orange County and it doesn't look like there will be any time soon.
I voted for San Jose. Irvine is all master planned and boring. San Jose is a real city. San Jose is my favorite part of the whole Bay Area!
