LA's contemporary art scene is kicking pretty strongly. It's hard to say that it's the city with the best scene, but the fact that it's so easy to have your own space to work in without paying through the nose has helped. Cheaper rent for space does go a long way, and while people pretending to play at an artist are common (in NYC or LA), having more people attempt it can equate to a more vibrant art scene and ultimately more "actual" artists in the end.
How do I say this kindly... Los Angeles isn't sophisticated enough to be any sort of art capital (outside of cinema). The art scene in New York is unrivaled in the US and IT puts LA's art "scene" to shame. And yes, that includes contemporary art.
Wrong. Philadelphia has dominated the American art scene since Colonial times. New York--fuggetaboutit. That place doesn't even have a fathom of what art is. (Paris is no longer the art capital of the world? Very funny for a city that has inspired artists for centuries. London only plays second fiddle to Paris within Europe due to size not quality. The British Museum even has stolen pieces of the Acropolis!)

Now that I think about it...the whole country needs to re-apprceciate the arts. The arts are key at holding up a mirror to this sometimes terrible place we call home. We can do better.
Well, we're talking about the contemporary art scene (and not just art in general) which LA definitely has going for it. I think a lot of us are missing that key distinction.
