I'd say Cali . They have alot of foreign borns etc etc that would just say they are from "cali" instead of the u.s ...unlike ppl from maine pennsylvania etc from my experience being in mexico
you have those states without a dominant/international city (ohio, virginia, new jersey, nebraska, etc.)
or you have those states that are just as infamous as their largest cities, or are known for a wide variety of different cultures (texas, california, new york, florida)
for instance, it's not uncommon for someone from los angeles to introduce themselves as being from california, or someone from dallas to say they're from texas. but i've never heard someone from chicago say "i'm from illinois", or someone from atlanta say they're from georgia

Depends where you are. Some in Somalia might know Columbus, OH or Minneapolis due to the large number of Somalis who immigrated there... similarly Hungarians know cities like Cleveland due to the same reason. From my travels in Eastern Europe, almost all of them knew of Cleveland. Why? A large percentage of people in the Cleveland area are from Eastern Europe... My take on it atleast. I never once said I was from Ohio when overseas, anywhere I went. I would say Washington DC and Cleveland. Everyone knew DC and most knew Cleveland. I think city-data posters believe that no one outside of the US knows cities other than LA, NYC, Miami, etc.. which is entirely and completely false.
I would also agree that states like Ohio, New York, California, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, etc would be more well known because they are the most populated states in the nation.
NY of course. It is the most recognizable state in the whole U.S.
I don't think it is. NYC is the most recognized city. But alot of people in this world,(EVEN in the US) couldn't identify which state New York is on a map.

What state has the most residents that would identify by state rather than the U.S.A overseas?
Without a doubt it would be Alaska!!- Alaskans identify themselves as "from Alaska" rather than from the USA. That's just the way it is way up here
Although Hawaii could be a close tie way out there.
