Of all the places you have lived in or visited(city, state or country), which one or ones seem to have the most genuine, happy and honest people? Which places seem to be the phoniest and most miserable? Thanks for your opinions.

Happy/nice: It has to be a state where no one drives.

Everyone in Portland is miserable, but they're pretty honest about it. Ask them how they are and, with a flat face, they'll look you in the eye and say, with an expressionless voice, "Wonderful, thank you."
Happiest people I've ever met have been from Cincinnati and Detroit, the most miserable have been in eastern KY and the state of Tennessee in general, despite its view as "the promised land" on this forum.

Savannah, GA; the locals will strike up a conversation with a stranger in a heartbeat. They seem to have a genuine interest in outsiders.

That's easy. Washington, DC. Lived there way too long.
Lots of miserable people in central and western NY that love to chronically complain about everything. Things could be worse.
I'll second Cincinnati as a place with people that seem happy. And also many areas of Maine. People love it there and are very happy living there.
Sad, but true. With that said, I think people in places like Ithaca, some of the "trendy" urban neighborhoods and communities outside of the cities tend to be fine.
