Planning my 2010 Summer Vacation. Where would I find the best New England vacation experience? I know the Cape is the most famous...but does it really top southern Maine? When I say southern Maine I'm talking about towns like Ogunquit, Wells, York...basically York County.

Which is the better vacation destination and also, how are these two New England coastal areas different?

Looking for somewhere with great waves, plenty of sand, and also walkable village centers with shoppes, etc. (Yes I know, both areas have all of these, but which is better according to you?)

If you're only looking into York county in Maine, then go with Cape Cod. If you don't mind driving about 20 more miles north to Portland, I would choose the Portland area. It's gorgeous and fun in the summer.

The water on the Cape will be warmer, but it will also be more crowded. I think the beaches on the Cape are much nicer for swimming and wading.

Personally I'd go with the Maine coast. Can't go wrong any place from York Beach up to Bar Harbor/Acadia Nat Park. Beautiful country.

They both get very crowded in the summer. But with the National Seashore and little hamlets on the outer Cape I think there is more oppurtunities to escape the crowds (Welfleet & Truro). The beaches are nicer on the Cape and places like Ogunquit and Kennebunkport are too crowded.

as another poster said, if you want to see the best of Maine, go past Portland.
