Hi all, I am a mid twenties single male, possibly relocating to NE Ohio for a job. The position is located in Solon. Where is a good suburb for a single guy to live that isn't too......boring haha. How is the city of Solon? I read it's a good family area, but how is the single life there? Here are just a few cities I have been looking at;

Solon
Chagrin Falls
Beachwood
Mayfield Heights
Shaker Heights

I would like to have a nice gym somewhere nearby also. I don't want to be too far from work, so less than 30 mile commute would be ideal.

Solon is a great eastside suburb popular with families and good schools. Maybe Cleveland Heights would be more to your liking, college area.

Shaker Heights or University Circle (both on the East side) would probably fit better.

University Circle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shaker Heights, Ohio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Be aware of Shaker Heights though, it's sketchy on the border that's closest to Cleveland.
However, Shaker has a lot of different ethnicities and is a good mix, so you have all the ethnic restaurants, cafes, shops, etc.

Solon is a very nice suburb of middle to upper-middle class with a good school system, but it's a very family oriented neighborhood.

If you don't mind a bit of a commute (about 24 miles, but with traffic it would be about a 40-45 minute drive or so) you can try Lakewood.
Yahoo! Maps, Driving Directions, and Traffic

Lakewood is an old community but it has lots of character and ethnicities with lots of ethnic restaurants and little shops. Lots of variety and not a cookie-cutter suburub.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakewood,_OH

You can also try living in downtown Cleveland, the drive with traffic would be around 30-40 minutes or so.
Downtown Cleveland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They're trying to gentrify downtown, so there's lots of condos and apartments.

You can go to rent.com or apartment.com and put your parameters in to take a peek at what's available in your pricerange.

Yahoo! Maps, Driving Directions, and Traffic

Just FYI, anywhere you move if you have to swing by or through Cleveland, there will be rush hour traffic and will slow up driving times. So a normal 10-15 minute drive will be 25-30 minutes (barring accidents). Especially on 490 or 90 (there always seems to be a fender bender or something on these freeways).

If you make a trip out to Cleveland to scope it out before your move, maybe ask a local about the traffic or neighborhood.
Also as always, when you do settle in a spot, make sure you know alternate routes in case of horrendous traffic due to accidents, general pile up, or bad weather (especially in the winter).

Hope this helps

Edit: oh yeah, Cleveland Heights (as the poster above me mentioned) has the Coventry neighborhood as well which is highly ecclectic and funky

Thanks for the suggestions! Yes, Lakewood is a nice area, but for the time being I would rather be closer to work.

Shaker Heights does look nice. So you're saying stay toward the east side of that city? I guess closer to Beachwood?

Maybe I'm missing something, but is University Ciricle the same as University Heights? I couldn't find it on a map.

Any opinions on Mayfield Heights?

Yeah, you want to check out the "East" side of Cleveland (which would be East of the Cuyahoga River, it's a dividing line of the Greater Cleveland Area).

University Circle is a neighborhood that borders Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights
University Circle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's like a hub with the Cleveland Clinic, Severance Hall, The Cleveland Art Museum, Case Western Reserve, etc...

Since it has CWRU and these major Cleveland attractions, there are lots to see and do along with shops, cafes, etc..

Beachwood is a very upscale neighborhood so it's a bit pricey, but it has a mall, strip malls, etc..
Beachwood, Ohio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

City of Beachwood, Ohio
(I'm not sure about the city's site's claim to low taxes however, since it is an affluent neighborhood)

But on the plus side it is very nice and safe, not sure about hot spots to mingle since I'm too poor to go slumming over there XD

Mayfield Heights is nice, it has lots of strip malls, apartments, close to everything, mix of people
Mayfield Heights, Ohio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Check out the Wikitravel site as well, they seem to keep everything simple and is typed up by real people not trying to "sell" a city or be too encyclopia-y like wikipedia.
Cuyahoga County travel guide - Wikitravel

And no problem with helping you do research. Longtime resident but I'm possibly moving to Florida, so I know what it's like going crazy trying to research a new city. ^ u ^

Edit: Also, check out http://www.cleveland.com/ - it's the online hub for The Cleveland Plain Dealer (the biggest newspaper in NE Ohio and surrounding areas). It can give you a feel for the community and what's happening in Cleveland.

(Wasn't sure where you're moving from, so I thought to cover all the bases)

PS: If you want to impress locals (depending upon where you're coming from) Cuyahoga is pronounced "Kye-ah-HOE-gah" and Berea (a city to the west of Cleveland) is pronounced "Beh-ree-AH" ; Mentor (a city far east of Cleveland) is pronounced "MEN-er" (t is kinda dropped, but a little bit there).
That's all I can think of for now. Oh, and if you're not from Ohio we call soda here "Pop" (as in soda pop, but we call it by the second part). XD

(sorry was in a silly mood with the Post Script hehe)
