Do a Kayak Ride Tour on the North end of Hatteras Island at Pea Island
Awesome suggestion!
We took our kids (9, 6, and 3) kayaking for the first time when we were on Hatteras Island last month. It was a great experience and one that we plan on making a yearly must. We went in soundside near Salvo and worked our way north. So many inlets and coves to explore and the views are amazing.
If you're on the Banks during the off-season, try Jockey's Ridge. It's so much more enjoyable when the sand isn't scortching hot. We were there in January and people were sledding down the dunes.
There are so many great family things to do, it's hard to go wrong.
I just saw on the news maybe someone can post link of a a old ship found and being tramsfer
to Graveyard of Atlantic Museum. For area that appears it dont have much has got alot
I love the OBX
The plane service to use is Burris Flying Service. It is out of Frisco. A head boat is a large boat with a lot of people on it. One of them, Miss Hatteras is a 75-ft boat. It is "like" charter fishing, but with a lot more people. It cost less than charter fishing. It would be good for the kids.
Crystal Coast is the Morehead City, Beaufort, Atlantic Beach area. It is further south of Hatteras. It is most likely out of your way, and not worth the time.
Unless, of course, you really like catching fish and having multiple options as to boat and cost.
come up north for a day and spend the day in Corolla...definitely do a wild horse tour. That was absolutely the highlight of my family's OBX vacation. We also did the Nags Head Dolphin Watch which was a little boring, yes it was great to see the dolphins but that wore off quickly and the kids didn't love the 2+ hours in the boat (i didn't mind though!).
Your kids are 7 & 10 years old and have memories of places they've been and things they've done before "at the beach" that will need to be validated & revisited of course. After that, there is always something new to discover and add to the lore. If you've got the money the plane ride idea gives a different perspective I suppose. With all the driving from VA to NC you probably don't want to do more; however, visiting the three lighthouses on the island (Carolla, Bodie, and Hatteras) might only take up half a day or so, and, the trip to Oakracoke lighthouse would be fun for the ferry ride, but the building isn't that appealing to most kids and neither is all the driving and such. F.Y.I. Fishing in NC now requires a license even at the beach and on head boats. However, most piers have a license that covers their customers while fishing on the pier which is good for out of state visitors.
Please have a safe and fun trip. B.M.
Go fishing. There's several piers along the ocean from Kitty Hawk to Avon. There's been enough fish around to keep them happy and kids love it..Miss Hatteras is a great head boat that runs out of Hatteras Village if you prefer a boat.
