Hurricane Earl brought this out in me.
I always loved to bodyboard, I never though aside from 2 lessons surfed. I didn't go to the beach enough to practice.
I'm 26...is it too late?
Not only is the question "would it be too hard" but are there any adult lessons...it would be uncomfortable being around teens and college kids.
Nope not too late at all, I started surfing at 25 and I have no athletic ability what so ever, so you got a head start on me LOL
I take lessons through Surf Camp Summer Camps offers surfing lessons learn to surf at Surf Camps Summer Camps . They offer adult classes and their fall weekend clinics are going on now. For example the weekend clinic I did the youngest was 20 and the oldest was 46. So even if you did get a college student or two it's not that bad since there are a mix of ages and most people will be at a similar skill level.
I'm 28 and just moved back to Wilmington and am ready to try my hand at surfing, for real this time around. I'm down to go in on an instructor with you if you're serious about knocking some lessons out before it gets too cold... PM me if you're interested!
To the "is it hard" question. I know a few instructors who all but guarantee that you'll get up on the board before they are done. Will you be ready for the pipeline? No. But you'll be able to tackle waves here.
The longer and thicker and wider the board, the easier to stand up. the harder to get out in big waves and the less you want to take it out. If you are learning to surf, go for something in the 8-9 ft length. You may not be able to "rip", but the fun will be much better for you and it will be the best board for the area's waves.
Most importantly, learn some surfing etiquate. If you are just learning, don't go get in the middle of a group of surfers. Find your own smaller waves and go.
There are so many manufactured boards now, that you can get a good deal or you can rent on from shops. Take it out on a smaller day and try it out. Make sure you have some wax, and enjoy.
