A blackfin tuna was caught off of Bogue Inlet Pier last Saturday. First ever caught from the pier in 50 years of operation. The fish weighed in just under 22 pounds. It was caught by Maurilio Marquez, a construction worker from Cary
It was the first tuna ever caught from that pier. Tuna are a highly migratory species and tend to stay offshore. The one exception for NC are bluefin tuna. These fish move very close to shore in Dec,Jan, Feb.I've seen schools of 4-600lb bluefins in 20 feet of water.
More amazing than this blackfin tuna landing is the ignorance and hatred towards a certain sector of the fishing community by a very small band of ardent anglers.
