Cost of Homeowners insurance in the New Bern Area? (Atlantic Beach: home, deductible)

Just read the thread below about insurance costs in Onslow County, and am wondering if folks in the NB area are experiencing the same?

We are looking to retire to the NB area, but if insurance costs are rising to $4,000+, we may have to rethink our plans.

Yes, apparently New Bern is also affected. My rates are going up 100%!!!
Why? Not in flood zone, no claims, just because they can!

We have a place in Sea Bright NJ, and moved to NC about a year ago.
We were also looking at New Bern to retire, as we want to be closer to the coast.
I am surprised to read about the insurance though, and may look elsewhere.
New Bern was about an hour inland from Atlantic Beach, and that is why I am so surprised!

Ins rates are high in all of the 18 coastal counties. As of May 1 2007, Insurance rates went crazy (NC Dept of Ins Increase) You do have choices. Most Homeowners think that just because their insurance premiums are being paid thru their escrow accounts that they are stuck, Not True. You can change your insurance provider at anytime but best to do it 2 months before the renewal. I suggest they price their company every couple years. USAA and Alstate have just lost their minds on the coast with the rates and deductibles, increases from 83 to over 100 % increases. There are Ins companies that are abot half the price for the same exact coverage in some cases. Moderator cut: tos violation

Homeowners insurance in the New Bern / Craven Co area varies greatly between companies for the same coverage. Not sure of the strategy some companies are taking but important to get a second opinion. .

I have a modest home in Village Woods area of New Bern. I just recieved by renewal notice from USAA with an increase from $1200 to $2600 or 105%! Like most I have never made a claim and don't live in a flood zone. USAA explained they have been paying out more in claims then they are taking in premiums. So, they want us to make up the difference? This is neither fair nor a good business practice. Nation wide quoted me $1000...I'll be signing with them today!
