I know there were projects to review the feasibility of upgrading US-64 east of Williamston to a freeway to Roanoke. With I-87 now seemingly approved to replace/extend the I-495 corridor from I-440 in Raleigh to Williamston (then north to Norfolk), is there a chance at this being renewed (even as a I-787 or something similar?)
Second question is whether there are plans to extend I-587 all the way around Greenville and further east?
Anyway, I doubt they would build 64 as a freeway all the way. Maybe bypass some of the towns and make it 4 lanes, but not a freeway.
LOTS of swamp and wetlands east of Williamston.
And, as long as it is taking to build SE 540, getting through there without Mark Basnight wheeling and dealing may take another millennium.

Doubtful and there's no chance of it becoming an interstate. As Mike noted, there are sensitive wetlands east of Williamston, never mind the potential for lawsuits from environmentalists. Another issue is that the Federal Highway Administration typically requires that the ending point of an interstate end at a point of significance, such as another interstate, a city with a significant population, or a military base. US-64 east of Williamston has none of that. It would have to be written into law by Congress for it to happen and I doubt Congress cares much for Manteo...

No. Greenville is the only reason that I-587 exists. It was the largest city in NC without interstate access, so that's how I-587 came about. Greenville had been pushing hard for US-264 to become an interstate since 2012. While Wilson is on the corridor, they've been indifferent about I-587. The way they see it, I-95 & I-795 is good enough for them. An I-587 extension east of Greenville won't happen for the reasons I mentioned earlier. Seeing as Greenville's population is nearing 100,000 and is the economic & medical hub of eastern NC, it made US-264 a shoe-in to become a future interstate. The interchange with I-95 in Wilson didn't hurt, either.
Now, there is a possibility that the US-264 freeway on the north side of Greenville will become part of a new interstate running from US-70/I-42 in Kinston to US-64/I-87 in Bethel by following the NC-11/US-13 corridor, with the idea of connecting the Global TransPark and Greenville to Hampton Roads.
The Eastern NC Gateway Act was introduced in Congress last September that would make that interstate happen, but it didn't get anywhere since it was an election year. I would expect another attempt to be made sometime this year.
