The family and I are heading to my parent's beach house in Wilmington for the 4th and this will be our first time being down there for the fireworks.

How bad is traffic on/around Front St.? Are there places where the view is better?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am assuming it will be pretty darn packed, parking wise, along Front St. and market st. and all the surrounding streets. We lived downtown and just rode our bikes a few blocks last year which helped I would just get there a bit early and park a few blocks away, like in the historic residential area and just walk. It's a beautiful town to walk several blocks in so you won't mind! (Say if you are facing the riverfront.. you would head left and park thataways - Ann St, Nun St, 2nd, 3rd etc.).

I think your best view will definitely be on Water St and the Riverwalk, which both run along the river.. unless you had a rooftop view to go to?? I don't think there would be a better view. Unless you'd prefer to go to the top of a parking garage and hang out up there haha. I would love to know how you enjoyed it afterwards!!

sorry I have no tips for you, as I hate crowds and refuse to go to these things. I stay at my parents house in Southport, and i wont even go into Southport because of the crowds and all. Takes forever for them to come out and go home. lol We do like sitting and watching the traffic.

July 1 every year they have fireworks on Oak Island, in celebration of the towns anniversary. We watch those and skip the 4th altogether.

Rooftop sounds nice if you can find somewhere you are allowed. Have fun!!

Me again. We went to Southport tonight, for a little of the festivities, caught the last 20-30 minutes of the music on stage. The crowd wasnt Huge, although I still refused to stand directly in it. LOL must be a phobia for me. The food was still up and going around 10. They are having the craft festival and the stuff going on in Southport tomorrow until 10 as well. Definitely worthy of a drive if you are in Wilmington looking for something to do for tomorrow. Traffic coming out tonight was okay, of course by 10:30 people were pretty much well gone. Monday night will be worse though. I hear people come from all over the place for the fireworks show in Southport.

Any suggestions on how to see it without being in the thick of things?

While the 4th has come and gone perhaps some people can use this for next year if they are planning on going to Wilmington for the 4th.

There is a large grass frield with access to the right of the PPD building downtown. Harnett and 3rd I believe. Great view. While there is some breathing room down there, there are still quite a few people. Get there about an hour before the fireworks go off (usually 9 i tihnk) and be prepared to sit in traffic for 30min - 1hr getting out. Once we were our of the field we were back to the house in about 15 minutes.
