I agree that there isn't much like Rehoboth and Dewey here that I've been to. (I spent 4 years in Delaware and 10 years in Maryland so went to those beaches many times.) I agree with SGMI that Wrightsville might be a *little* bit like Dewey and Carolina a bit like Rehoboth but overall not that much. The only other place I can think of that might be a bit like Dewey is Surf City, but I haven't spent time there - just passed through on the way to Topsail. In any case, none of the beaches in NC will have Grottos or Thrashers, so they won't be as good anyway.
Don't forget Nicola's! I heard Dolly's was moving as the family was selling the building.
the beaches in NC are mainly for getting away and relaxing.
This is why I love most NC beaches, especially Emerald Isle among others. I think the NJ, DE, OC MD beaches are cool too, but it's a different vibe there for sure and much more commercialized with food, entertainment, etc. I much prefer the long stretches of pristine sand and relaxation of the NC beaches. Maybe I'm getting old?

Is what you have stated about NC beaches being unlike Dewey or Rehoboth still accurate? Places develop and change so quickly, and I am trying to avoid party beaches, where the coast roads are long stretches of bars and restaurants to attract tourists, and there is no feel of a permanent residential community.

Nothing substantial has changed in the past 18 months in that regard. Property value have shot up in that time however.

No, it's all pretty much the same on the NC coast. The beach is the main attraction at our beaches. People want different things but if it's purely for beach purposes there's lots of great options. If you're looking for more commercialized then Myrtle, North Myrtle, Cherry Grove would be more up that alley.
The Surf City beaches are absolutely not party beaches where thousands of college kids hang out. As said, the visitors are mainly families. There are permanent residents in Hampstead, mainland Surf City, Holly Ridge and Sneads Ferry. The Brunswick County towns attract retirees who live there full time.
Thanks for the responses. It sounds like I am on the right track with coastal NC. Need to make a scouting trip soon.
