Writing a column and looking for opinions from vacationers or residents of Atlantic Beach and surrounding communities on the island. What makes a great beach town in which to live or vacation? What (if anything) is lacking here to meet your ideal? Thanks for any input.

Hi there.

I have vacationed in and around Atlantic beach about a half dozen times.

What is good about it: Usually the traffic has not been too bad. I love being able to go to Cape Lookout, which is amazing. The Fort is great too. Very tranquil and peaceful.

Not good: Not a whole lot to do. I have found myself bored by the middle of the week, which is why the last couple of times I came for only a couple days. Especially in the off season, it seems like the whole surrounding area is closed down at about 5pm

We are from the other coast (Pacific) and have only been to Atlantic Beach twice, once in the summer and once in the winter. The winter was hands-down our favorite.

It was quite cold when we were there, in the 20's, which I understand is pretty unusual. The beaches were pristine with no one else around as far as the eye could see. The air so crisp you could taste it. The lodging was amazingly well priced and what an experience to open our eyes in the morning to see the ocean right outside our window. Not much open but we could've eaten Smithfield's for every meal (can't get eastern NC barbeque in CA) so we were quite happy.

Can't wait until we live out that way, there are still two seasons we have yet to enjoy.
