The best schools? Well I moved to Western Carteret because of the schools, I believe th stats will back up the academics of Croatan High School...My second choice would have been Swansboro schools...They seemed to stack up by the stats for second for me...Third was Morehead City schools....Or Newport....But I would have to say the best elementary school is outside New Bern called Brinson....It was always getting awards when we lived there..I relocated from New Bern for the schools in Western Carteret, or Swansboro, or Morehaed City...They had evryting I wanted for my kids, small size, great academics, location...If you go to my website, I have links to the schools and a link to their report cards....

New Bern is charming, for visits. For living, not recommended. Besides the tiny 3-4 block historical touristy spot, it's a dump.

Sneads Ferry is very nice. You will be very close to the ocean but don't worry much about hurricanes...the newer homes can withstand it. I've lived here so long, we automatically know what to do and just do it. Just get a generator! Oh, and leave if it's a Cat 3 or greater. That pretty much applies to the whole coastal region.

Historic district is much larger than 3 - 4 blocks.
Dump?
You show your ignorance.

Jacksonville, NC is terrible. If you are looking for quality of life, J-Ville is not for you. The customer service is terrible, the workers are lazy, and there are no jobs. If you are a spouse, good luck finding a job on base. About 80% of the people working for MCCS are locals with no attachment to the military. Prospects off base are not much better. Of the spouses I have talked to the average wait for a job is about 1 year (on and off base). Even professionals have trouble finding employment here. The local population has a severe dislike for military personnel. Most of J-Ville's non-DoD population lives in poverty (due to lack of employment). Jacksonville depends solely on the military as its income. Even though the military spends money here, none of the money goes into infrastructure. The bases are the only thing keeping this God forsaken town on the map. If there was industry here aside from the military J-Ville would be a better place to live. Until the local government gets their heads out of their pockets, J-ville will just be a slum living in the shadow of its military bases.

I noticed that NC doesn't have basements LOL, so we are prepared for the loss of some living (running) space.
I think the closer you are to the beach, the fewer basements you'll find due to the higher water table. In Jacksonville, there are quite a few homes with basements. Many of the older, better-built, pre-1960s homes have basements. Check out the old Country Club area. Several 5 BR homes with basements.

Good luck.

maybe north of New Bern, where it's all two lanes and curvy and such, but it's four lanes into J'ville, with the exception of a short stint in Jones county, and that portion is not well traveled. Speaking of jones county, you'd get a reasonable commute from there as well (Maysville, pollocksville, Trenton).
