I can honestly see it happening in the FBS, four huge conferences of 16 teams. With the Big 10 and Pac 10 looking to expand, and places like the Big 12 and Big East looking weak - I can see sometime down the road four giant conferences vs. the six now.
One for the west, one for the midwest, one for the east, one for the south - roughly. Probably wouldn't happen for another 5-10 years at the earliest, but sometime the financials will become too overwhelming to not have this.
East: Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia, Connecticut, Missouri, Louisville, Cincy, Iowa St., Georgia Tech, N.C. State, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Boston College, Maryland, Virginia Tech
There might be a few that could be switched around. A few schools are gonna end up getting burned, hence the rise of someone like Conference USA merger with Mountain West to a 14-16 team fifth conference.
Such as: Boise St., TCU, Air Force, New Mexico, Wyoming, Fresno St., UNLV, Nevada, Colorado St., Houston, UTEP, Middle Tenn. St., East Carolina, Memphis, Marshall, and Rice
