A lot of those people are not even in school, have dropped out, or don't want to leave the U-District.

You would list the UW but exclude Evergreen State College in Olympia? The whole premise of Evergreen is to be alternative, with its huge organic farm and stuff like that. With a Top 10 med school and some great programs in the sciences and engineering, the UW tilts away from granola. However, departments such as ecology, forestry, and unusual departments like Scandinavian studies might be more stocked up with granola types.

Let us stipulate that any list of crunchy granola, hippie colleges MUST CONTAIN EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE.

Don;t knock Scandinavian Studies, Robert! My son the Vegan, Anarchist, Socialist almost majored in that!

With my full support, Very proud to be Scandinavian.

Funny but true Evergreen anecdote told to me by a current student during our recent visit there.

A discussion became heated at a class in Evergreen, turning into a full blown argument. Once things had cooled down, the Professor a Hippie of 72, with long grey braids, whipped out a stick of sage which she lit and burned in order to "clear the room of negative vibrations and entities that might be attracted to discord"

So you've actually been there? Wow. That "energy" just hangs in the air. And if you approach from one of the less used roads onto Evergreen's property, you can see the Organic Farm.

No worries about the Scandinavian Studies. I knew someone who did Basque Studies, and he was a very "unique" person. I just imagine somebody going off to their Scandinavian language classes wearing clogs and a sweater with a few torn threads, that's all. Heck, if I wanted to go to college to have a fun, an easy time, and amass a near-perfect GPA, I probably would have double-majored in Italian and (Spanish or French), so I have NO problem whatsoever with language majors, as long as they don't try to sell me something made of hemp.

I think you meant UNC Asheville. App students are too concerned about staying warm. Lees-McRea in Banner Elk might merit a mention

Thank you. I only know of UNCs at Chapel Hill, Charlotte and Greensboro. I thought there might be others.

Yes I've been there.

LOL about the hemp! My son uses hemp shampoo. I like hemp hand lotion.

This just in.

During lunch, I went to the P.O. and pulled into a space next to a Subaru wagon with an Oberlin College sticker. Its driver, who also went into the P.O., was a middle-aged Asian-American woman who was frumpy, both in her grooming and her clothing.

It was my choice of the Midwestern ones, and also on the list linked here by one of the posters.

This trumps every-other "crunchy" college by far.

Yeah, it is the KING, not even the queen, of "crunchy" colleges. This gives credence to the Pacific NW's reputation for being granola. Look at how many other crunchy ones are in the region, for not having such a significant population (Reed, Western Washington, U of O, and even Southern Oregon Univ. at Ashland, put on the map by their Shakespeare Festival).
