So I was watching the Katie Couric show today, and the topic was about people in their 20s and late 20s living at home. I'm about to turn 23 and my parents are kind of kicking me out soon and they say that I need to leave they will still help me out a little bit financially, but I need to leave. So I will be moving in with my sister and her family where I will contribute a little financially like paying rent etc.

However this female on the show who lives with her mother currently right now had went to college received her Bachelors degree, looked for a job but no luck, and so she went to go get her masters and she got that and she still doesn't have a job. I'm really nervous because the job that she wants seems like a realistic career, and yet she can't get it. Her major was Communications and her career is in the marketing side of communications I believe for a company.

By watching this show today is making me VERY scared again. I came on here months ago about if I should stay in college or not. I graduated in 2010 went to college that fall then in 2011 at the beginning of the year I took a break which lasted 1 year and 6 months and so I went back to be a part time student and part time worker. Right now Im just getting my core classes out of the way. However Im not good at a lot of things I've tried and I'm not good at them esp anything math related.
They say if you don't know what you want, try your interest and your interest are the root of what you really want and should be or at least in the field, however with me my interest is what people think that aren't realistic, which I understand, but it sucks at the same.

My interest is acting, TV/Film either in front of or behind the scenes. I like interviewing people and I like radio, it seems very interesting and fun presenting news to people. I also like playing the lottery from time to time and I think it would be fun having a career on tv saying the numbers from the balls.

So I thought about the "dream" career that Im interested in which would be a Correspondent for entertainment news which includes interviewing people and presenting entertainment news on the radio.

I go to a 2 year technical college but deciding if I should transfer to another community college that has more of a variety of 2 years degrees to transfer to a university . The majors are Film, Communications, Theatre and Journalism. Which are here http://www.gpc.edu/programs/Associate-of-Arts

The current program at my school is this right here below
Chattahoochee Technical College*-*Television Production Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree

The job opportunities for the program that Im in right now is Associate Producer Audio Visual Specialist, camera Operator, Board Operator, DOP, Editor, Film & Video Editors, Floor Director, Grip, Graphic Designer, Independent Video Producer, Lighting Designer, Lighting Director, News Photographer, Production Technician, Radio Producer, Script Supervisor, Studio Camera Operator, TV director, Video Journalist Videographer, & Video Recording Technician.

IDK what I should do but I can tell you the school that I go to right now, the program is shorter then the route that would go if I go to GPC and then transfer to a university. At the technical college I would graduate around around 24 or 25.

The best thing I can think of is to go to a radio station or a small tv studio and ask for a job for a internship and or to be a receptionist and work my way up. While going to the 2 year program tech school that Im in right now.
IDK I think I should speak to a counselor at my school when it comes to education.

As in for a career I wouldn't mind interviewing people/celebrities on camera or film the interviews.
In high school I took Broadcast Video Production for 3 years and I've done projects such as interviewing and filming at the same time.
I just want to be happy I don't care working for a job that I will get $80,000 a year, as long as I work in a radio station or TV station and have my own little studio apartment or 1 bedroom I would be happy, I'm not really materialistic. I dont need the latest and greatest stuff.

But the way I see it if that 26 year old woman on the show couldn't get a career that is actually a realistic one, its kind of making me think why not just achieve your dream career if you cant get a regular real job after you get a degree. you might as well try to achieve your dream career esp if your not good at anything else like myself.

My point is that Its just scary to have a woman that has a masters degree and lives with her parents and her job is being a waitress!

Scary or realistic?

I just googled "Communication..." and was about to type degree, yet one of the top things that was listed was "Communication USELESS".

It then spouted articles stating the top worthless degrees you could receive.

Even Edgar Allan Poe had a hard time pursuing his "dream". He loved writing, yet could barely make it by with the money he made.

Not to frighten you, but just because that person has a Master's, doesn't mean it makes him/her more appealing. I know a person who is getting a Master's that doesn't even require him to leave his bedroom... it's all online, even the tests.

I watched the same episode of Katie, actually the first episode of Katie I ever watched was this one. It made me feel ashamed of myself because I am living at home as well. I am working on my second college degree. I pay rent and bills at the home and I have had my own apartment as well but I needed to move back in to finish up this second degree. I see all of these studies that make is seem like millenials are lackluster and not full of ambition, its the opposite. We are full of ambition but every door we open it is shut in our faces and we have to figure out new ways to keep that door open.

I did agree with the points that the lady made on the show. We do need to stop running back to mommy and daddy everytime something goes wrong. Once we start flying we may slip up bet we can't return home we have to use the knowledge that we have been taught and keep moving forward.

I think if you think a twenty something can make $80k in communications out of college, that you are in a very rude awakening.

I'm a 41 year old accountant (a good and stable career) and I make half that. My husband, who majored in broadcast communications, works as a sales assistant for a national cable company and makes $50k.

It would be more realistic to expect your first job to pay somewhere around $30k. Increases will come over time as you work your way up the ladder. Good luck.

He said he doesn't care if he makes $80,000, but just makes enough for a small studio apartment. $30,000 is probably realistic, probably less if it's radio (which is on the way out in general).

OP, I definitely think you should apply at a radio station, even for an unpaid part-time position. You need to find out if you really have potential and working in the field will help you determine that (as well as find out the real scoop from people in the business). Remember that these fields you listed have WAY more applicants than jobs.

That could be almost anybody. I have a masters degree and experience and that could be me as well.

I have had the fortune of seeing different extremes of coping with being unable to find professional jobs in your field of education. Some live off their spouse, others participate in their families business. In either case, you are living off somebody else.

In other cases, where people don't have that option, you do what you do to scrape by. You work as an office manager/admin job, retail, and maybe even two jobs. Or you take a job in your field at significantly decreased responsibility and/or pay.

A lot of people string together jobs and make a career out of it.

That's the real world.

Addendum, but why is living with your parents such a shameful thing for college graduates?

If they allow it and are able to keep their own house, why not?

You'd save money because expenditure for rent, bills, food, etc. would be minimal. Plus in an age where sometimes college grads need to do UNPAID internships/ volunteer work, especially for fields like communication, isn't it the best option to save as much as you can?

Well communications is a very broad category, it really depends what aspect you want to work in.

That said the stuff you listed is more of the media/entertainment end, which is SUPER competitive. "Glamour" careers are hard to break into.

What you need is connections, and a school that is known as tops in the field can provide you with that. That and actually interning in the field, meeting people and making connections.

It must be said that or many of the glamorous fields, you will spend the very early years not being paid much if at all. They have too many people who willing to do anything to break in. That's what you have to realize if you go down that path.

I agree that 30-35K is about what entry level pay is in a lot of places, but I think the problem is more that it is harder to live on that solo in particular regions of the country. It used to be that you could get a tiny studio as a single person with entry level pay if nothing else, but not so much any more. So more of them end up back home. Plus grad school is more popular than it used to be because it is more necessary now.

Shame is a relative term in life.

There are people who are 55 and 60 who are living with their parents. It would be older, but do those parents live that long?

I have seen it. My coworkers and their parents, etc, etc. It's why I never look down on anybody.

I know one communications major that has never worked in the field. Went to a private university. Is now a kindergarten teacher. I think she worked in a pharmacy before that.
