I just found this site but wanted to add my .02 -- the orginal poster is from a neighboring county where the Grading Scale is being changed.
In King George county, Va. we still have what's called the 7 point scale: 94-100 = A, 86-93 = B and so on. This has caused the GPA's to be substantially lower for the KGHS students when compared to other schools and although there has been talk with the School Board it is not likely to change soon. I am glad and hope it is true that many Universities either recalculate or have other ways of evening the playing field in this situation. But I can't help but think there is still some 'small' bias just by looking at a 3.2 on the transcript === realizing it may be a 3.6 elsewhere. Personally, I am a fan of standardized scores, because in our case with KGHS it helps level the playing field.
We've already run into situations where GPA is used to determine scholarships and upon questioning -- these Colleges use the raw GPA as provided by the HS so the 7 point scale ends up keeping scholarships away. It would be great if the schools could all go to the same grading scale
