Love CC -- I haven't been able to sit at a poker table for quite a long time. Those are some awesome pics of the area!

When we lived north of Divide, we'd always take an annual Fall drive down Hwy 67 to Cripple Creek and Victor to see the Aspen, even though the Pike National Forest was our back yard. Other than the drive on 285, Hwy 67 between Divide and Cripple Creek is the most beautiful stretch of aspen viewing in the state.

It's still in triple digits here in AZ and I just planted a second round of veggies and herbs. Sigh. No fall here...

Sonic, oh Sonic - What can I say to convince you of the error of your ways? VA is a beautiful state, especially this time of year, but oh, the hassles of living there (at least in NoVA). TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC. Unlike anything you'll find in CO, even Denver. It doesn't really matter what day, or what time. Coming back from an Orioles game, I've been caught in dead stopped traffic at 1:00 AM on I-95, followed by stop and go for 20 miles. That's when they shut down lanes to do maintenance (granted it's probably the only time to do it, but they take 3 lanes down to 1; instant major traffic jam). It's also when they open up the Wilson bridge; guaranteed to stop everything cold for at least a half-hour to 45 minutes. Then there's the rush hour (actually about a four hour period, repeated in the PM), guaranteed to turn Mother Theresa into a homicidal maniac. If you're heading north toward DC, you'd better be clear of Quantico by 5:30 or you're in stop and go all way into town. I know you've said you like the heat and humidity, but nobody likes traffic like you'll find every single day there. Oh, and did I mention the hurricanes and tornados? Then there's the ice storms (I was caught in the infamous ice storm a few years ago that resulted in all the I-95 on/off ramps being closed; result: 7 hours to travel 50 miles, a real fun night).

Well yeah. I know. I did sit for many hours of my recent vacation in that traffic, and it did suck...although I kept my tranquility by rolling down the windows and listening to the cicadas, breathing in the spongy air, and listening to U2. My kids thought I was insane, because even though we were stuck in traffic, I was happy to be home. "Do you hear that!? That is a cicada! There!" "Yes Mom. We don't STILL don't care about your weird gross bugs, Mom. Are we going to be there anytime...today?" lol

I would not want to have to commute, at all. I will only move back when I'm ready to run my own small business, which will be out of either Charlottesville or Richmond, and I'll live and shop nearby. For all that I love VA, I have no love at all for DC--the tourist stuff is not worth the hassle of just getting and being up there. Oddly, for a city that was a total dump for decades, Richmond is having a bit of a cultural revival, which I am watching with keen interest. A lot of art and music is stirring there, and many friends of mine are involved right up to their eyeballs.

But for all my sighing and daydreaming, it's going to take a bunch of years to build the kind of capital to get my idea off the ground, which is fine. I'm thinking it's a phase of my life that will come after my kids are grown up and found their own paths to walk.
