The reason I ask is, my parents moved to Prescott AZ years ago when they retired, and they found that there isn't the same competition to get your business as they were used to in the large metropolis of SoCal. Fewer mechanics means fewer enticing deals to get your oil changed for cheap. Fewer stores means fewer deals on groceries, or home goods, or whatever else. Etc. They find much more competition (better deals), not to mention more selection, on things when they go on excursions down to the Phoenix area.

In my research of Flagstaff AZ (another place my husband and I are considering moving), I've found similar issues there as well. Plus, apparently Flag's elected officials seem opposed to growth and competition (they won't even allow Costco to put in a store).

I realize the Prescott area and Flagstaff area are much smaller than CS, but I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced this? Do you find more competition and selection in the Denver area? Just something I'm curious about.

No shortage. I've lived in a few very different places. When we were considering cities, we looked at flagstaff briefly. I covered the entire wikipedia page because I love learning, but it wasn't a serious contender once we learned that it had around 60,000 residents (if i recall correctly). Cities that size don't have much competition. There is usually 0 to 1 big club stores (Sam's / Costco), so no competition there. Having lived in places like that, I knew it was not a good fit for us. The springs has a healthy amount of competition. Generally speaking that level of competition starts around 200k residents and is strong around 350k to 400k residents. (Counting the suburbs around the cities) The springs has around 600k.

Agreed lurtsman, seemed to me like the population in the CS area would prompt more competition than you'd see in those smaller-town areas like Flagstaff. Thanks!
