So far you guys have been great with information, today I booked my Estes Park motel and Colorado Springs motel, I had just about given up on Maroon Bells, but I googled and found out it is only 4.5 hours to drive from Colorado Springs yo Maroon Bells, I am thinking about leaving mid day on a Thursday and driving to Maroon Bells, that way we will have all day Friday in the Aspen area, we will probably head back to Denver mid day Saturday to be ready to catch an early morning flight on Sunday. Does this sound realistic?

Great! Do you have any other suggestions for things to see around Aspen?

I don't, personally - I don't get up I-70 way very often - so much to see and do down here in the southern half of the state!

I suggest taking Highway 24 out of Colorado Springs and going over Independence Pass into Aspen. Then, when you return to Denver you can take I-70 and experience Glenwood Canyon.

John Denver's sanctuary park in town is well done. We spent about an hour there.

Independence is a great trip for most people. However, if the OP has any fear of heights or concerns about driving a mountain road with no shoulders and 1000'+ drop offs, this is most definitely not the road for them. My wife is one of those and this would be a white knuckle, high anxiety, hyper-ventilation trip for her if I took her over it. Myself, I feel it is pretty tame. Your mileage may vary.

Maroon Bells is nice, but is just another couple of mountains, IMO. Its a long trip to look at a couple of large rocks. However, you are in the company of tens of thousands of other people who drive there for the views. The ******** ghost town site is neat of you like that sort of thing, but can be underwhelming depending on expectations. It most certainly is not a Hollywood set type of town. There is plenty of high end shopping, galleries, eateries, and other parks in Aspen that are neat to see. The hot springs or vapor caves in Glenwood Springs may be a nice diversion of you want to swim or relax. There are also shopping, cafe's, and historic structures to visit there. Glenwood Canyon is a very nice drive too.

Driving to Aspen from Colorado Springs via Independence Pass is pleasant. It can be a bit nerve wrecking on certain sections of the Independence Pass, but not bad really.

Shortly before reaching Aspen, you might want to stop by this place called "Grottos (Ice Cave)." On the way back to Denver, I'd highly recommend hitting Glenwood Hot Springs.
