Sadly, the mountain west has become almost unaffordable for many young families. I know the OP said they want to avoid the South, but if I was in their shoes I would at least consider NW Arkansas. Walton money has really made it into a desirable area over the past couple of decades. And still relatively affordable.

OP: Here's a list

The 50 best places to live in America based on cost of living, quality of life, and more

https://www.businessinsider.com/us-n...america-2016-3

Note that Colorado Springs is #2 on that list.

If I were you I would focus on finding better jobs.

They must've weighted cost of living higher than quality of life. I've lived in both HSV and COS and quality of life in the Springs >>>>>>>>> quality of life in Huntsville.

I notice that Boulder comes in at number 4 on that same list. Boulder most certainly has its moments, but the cost of housing there is nothing short of incredible. I'd move to Boulder in a heartbeat except for the fact that I'd end up having to live camped out somewhere up Boulder Canyon.

What about Twin Falls ID, Helena or Great Falls MT, Casper WY, La Grande OR? Grand Junction CO? Live in Pueblo West / work in Pueblo? Rapid City / Spearfish SD? Elko NV wouldn't get interest from many but I'll mention with this group.

Might get better suggestions if you set a metro size range, say if you have a snow / cold limit or anything else you are looking for. Most of the more affordable places will be in smaller metros or satellite cities of bigger ones.

I suggest moving to where the jobs are in that field.

Here is an example.

What didn’t you like about Tulsa? Just maybe three things about why you feel like it wasn’t working for you.

IMO, the Midwest is underrated- the ratio of what you get paid compared to the kind of housing you can afford is often pretty good and there are a lot of other good quality of life markers in many cities there.

Indianapolis has serious crime issues. If I were in their shoes, I'd go back to Tulsa long before I'd move to Indy.

They could live in the safer suburbs and commute. Here is new construction starting at 330K.

The Indy job is just an example of job opportunity + low cost of living. One can search for many similar situations in other cities.
