My topo rec map of Colorado shows a local road (typically graded or dirt surface) that goes north from Mt. Crested Butte to eventually wind up at Hwy 133 near Redstone.

Thanks, I talked to a friend this am that said there are some nice spots along slate river road also. Going camping with the dog and atv, wife is out of town :-) RP

Gothic is a Forest Service campground. I was just checking their website over the weekend, and some of their campsites require reservations and some don't. Of course, I can't remember whether Gothic does or not. Anyway, we've driven up that way in the past, and it's a nice area.

Actually my friends told me that bears have been in their yard several times (in Gunnison along the river) and said back country camping alone without a firearm right now would not be such a great idea. Talked me into staying with them in their cabin. Did the infamous Devils Punchbowl on the atv, margin for error is very small. There were however a few tent campers north of Gothic Sunday am. Thanks to all. RP

bears are 99.9% never a problem backcountry camping.
usually when bears are hanging around a house or cabin it's because the trash isnt' locked up and sealed the way it should be.
firearms are not a necessity for backcountry unless you are hunting. if you want to "feel safer" carry a can of bear spray. People who train grizzly bears carry it with them, so obviously it's an effective method of subduing the animals.
