Hi! My husband and I are considering a move to Colorado. We've lived in Ohio our whole lives (minus vacations and his Army tour in Iraq!) and are ready for a change. We're looking for an area that's quiet but not desolate, somewhere that is perhaps just a little bit slower-paced than what we are used to (we live in the city).

Husband is a sheriff deputy, and would be looking for a city department - small town would be ok, but with so much concern about layoffs, we'd prefer a bigger city police department. He's also in the Army Reserves, so we may consider active duty at Fort Carson. His MOS is 21W - does anyone know if he would have to re-class?

I am a marketing manager specializing in search engine marketing (e-commerce), but would love to return to a writing position - my degree is in English/Journalism. Not sure what the big markets of Colorado are - any help is appreciated!

We are visiting in May on vacation, to the Denver area. Any suggestions to other places we should visit? (We are bringing our dog with us, so any places that are dog-friendly would be awesome!)

Thanks to all the Colorado folks who give advice - we are looking forward to visiting your state as tourists...and hopefully as new residents!

Jeez, from the looks of things, a lot of police officers want to move here all of a sudden.

If you want to locate by Fort Carson the closest cities are: Colorado Springs, Fountain and Pueblo.

In Pueblo the major newspaper is the Pueblo Chieftain but I am not sure if they are hiring. The major university in Pueblo is CSU - Pueblo if you are looking to teach but there are smaller colleges such as Pueblo Community college and Pikes Peak community College close to Fort Carson. I know Pueblo is hiring police officers but not sure about any place else.

Well Colorado Springs dangled that carrot of hope in front of Pueblo and Canon City which was the DOC Headquarters... then ripped it away like hope from a Bronco fan with a three game lead in late December.

Happy new year.

Janelle,
Thanks for the suggestion. We live in Cincinnati now, but are both from small towns originally. Don't get me wrong, I love the city and there are lots of great things about it here, but our jobs are just so hectic that sometimes I feel like we're forgetting to just live and be happy!

I guess we'll see when we visit if we would fit in!

I am a Realtor in Colorado Springs and a lot of people pick Colorado Springs to move to because it's so pretty here with Pikes Peak, folks are friendly, diverse job opportunities, VERY DOG FRIENDLY!! Even though there are 500,000 folks here, you still have a small-town feel. Coming from a small farm town of 8,000 growing up and then living in Denver for several years, I find Colorado Springs to be an excellent place to live. So many people come here for vacation or with the military and return to live and/or retire because they just love it here.

Happy New Years to You and Yours

I think you would also like Colorado Springs, but go where the jobs are. If you have to commute to Fort Carson, it's not so bad from Denver. Maybe an hour and twenty minutes for an occassional trip.

I moved here from Ohio, after being gone for 20 years. Best decision I ever made. I now work at Ft. Carson and would never look back.

What is the latest on the expansion of Fort Carson, still on track to double by 2011?
