Thinking about moving there from Florida, looking for a smaller town, roughly 10,000-50,000 in population, also a pretty liberal place. All suggestions are appreciated.

I would highly recommend the small town of Gunnison, CO. But it is small ... 5K maybe, and rather far from bigger cities (4 hrs to Denver, 1 hr to Montrose, and 2hrs to Grand Junction.) Oh, and it can get VERY cold in winter. Last year it didn't ... we never shoveled snow all winter. Denver nearly got buried in snow ... unusual. So far this November has bee clear, sunny, and warm - 57 F today. It all depends on what you are looking for. Skiers flock to Gunnison and Crested Butte.
The nice thing about most of Colorado is that a few days after a big snow storm the skies are blue and the sun is out ... very important to me. Good luck. --MP |

Sounds like a nice place, I now live in a small town of only 20,000 people, very conservative county. Tell me, how stricty are marijuana/medical marijuana laws enforced around there? No trouble for patients, I hope. Also, could you direct me to a website of sorts that shows property for sale, not homes, just land? Thanks for the reply.

Good luck finding that--especially the no neighbor in sight part, unless you bring a boatload of money with you.

Thanks for all the help, Durango sounds like a nice place, any residents on here? If so, could you help me find a site that has durango land for sell? I'd like to perhaps have a log house/mountain stone castle built. All help is appreciated.

There are lots available to build homes in Douglas County. Many areas available with larger lot sites in Castle Rock (Keene Ranch), Franktown, Elizabeth, Perry Park etc. There is a Colorado website available to search lots and homes at REColorado.com or you can search at Realtor.com Either should have most of the available lots and homes for you to look at.

You might like Durango and vicinity, save the high real estate prices. Then also, even with the college not exactly the most liberal place possible. But it may work for you.
Another possibility would be Nederland and vicinity. Again, real estate possibly problematic, but not nearly as outrageous as some other areas, particularly if you choose a more remote spot. Not only is Nederland a relatively easy commute to Boulder but still has a distinctly bohemian ambience. More than a few locals you may find yourself simpatico with. And Boulder is surely one of the most liberal islands within the state. Aside from possible problems with price, Jamestown might also suite you. Basically and in fact, the exact spot you choose will make all the difference. |
