For any of you looking for the perfect place to live in Colorado, look at Lake City (about an hour south of Gunnison.) I'm a 4th generation Coloradoan and have lived in Denver, Boulder, Canon City, Nederland, and Aspen. NONE of them even hold a candle to Lake City. Is it cold here in the winter? Yes! It's blankety, blank cold. But it's so beautiful that you'll forget how cold you are. Check out Lake City on Google then come here - you have to drive since there are no flights here - and investigate the best place to live in the lower 48.

Lake City is beautiful, I'd live there if I didn't have to work for a living . Just curious are you retired? I know Lake City has very few permanent residents and Hinsdale County is the least populous in Colorado so I assume the people who do live there have lots of retirement money to live off of. Sounds like quite the paradise!

I was at Lake San Cristobal a few years ago after climbing Sunshine and Redcloud Peak. It was Incredible!!!!

Went to Lake City for the last 2 summers. Not a lot of choices for shopping or restaurants, but most people, like myself, go for the hiking. I would bring my wife, but she is more into window shopping and antiquing. I might have to vacation in Ouray or Telluride for that.

San Juans are great. Tried to do Uncompahgre last year, but didn't feel that my truck was able to do the 4wd trail. We turned back. Got a new Tacoma this year, and going to give it another try

I think best is relative. I've been to Lake City a few times and it's a great outdoor playground location, but as far as living there especially for non-retirees I think it would be a serious challenge.

There are no jobs, relatively no shops, restaurants, medical services, etc...

You'd be looking at a 3-4 hour one-way drive for any major services basically and about a 1 1/2 hour drive to even normal or medium type services (small doctors offices, bigger grocery stores, etc...)

Lake City is nice but as mentioned it's isolated and not for everyone. If you want to live there year round you probably need to bring your own money.

Lake City is a good destination for hikers....alot of easy 14s to bag from there...4 wheeling is great also, expecially the drive over Engineer Pass to Telluride....wooooha.....
Was there a few years ago and it seemed like every other house had a For Sale sign out front.....I recon after a couple of years there folks get cabin fever BIG TIME......

Our three commissioners Stan Wintery, Cindy Dozier and Susan Thompson made the decision to let the OHVs run through Lake City with NO ENFORCEMENT. We, in the country along this "Hell Route" got NO VOTE PERIOD!!!!! We never got a public discussion, we did not get Zip. I have lived year round here in Lake City since 1973 but all this OHV traffic, extreme noise level is pushing me past my limit.
If you are looking for a beautiful, peaceful, quiet place to enjoy the San Juan Mountains, Lake City surely ain't that anymore.
Also, you OHVers bring up those machines to ride the loop. Tell all your friends there are almost no patrols or any kind of enforcement to hamper your good time AND right now we still have miles of untouched alpine tundra for you to ride on, burn doughnuts, and leave your mark that will be there in a hundred years. Also, the prices in Lake City tend to be on the very high side so stock up on all your needs before you get here!

Rebscott, you have not been here in a year at least. There is NO QUIET here now!! We are now the OHV capitol of Colorado. So, come on up and rip up some alpine tundra. With no enforcement of ANY kind, you can have all the fun you want.
There are a lot of homes newly put on the market CHEAP! (Mine too) So, as you can see, there is some great bargains available - hell offer the looser half price there is a good chance he will take it just to get out of here!

I was just about to ask Rebscott if he or she is selling a house in Lake City. The OP sounds like a desperate pitch to sell ASAP.

I've heard it is very LOUD there and a lot of people sell (or want to) soon after they buy.

Is this true?
