To the OP, I would assume any city that is featured on that show would have some type of gang issue.
I still dont know how little ole Columbia made it on Gangland I watched that show several times and remember watching the news as the events unfolded.. I have been in and around both Gonzalas Gardens and Saxon Homes (before they were demolished) and Hendley Homes (also demolished on Rosewood) These guys were petty compared to some of the other episodes that featured Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville etc... It was rumored that this was all a ploy by the Sheriff to seal his re-election bid. Nonetheless.. "bad" seems relative to where you are coming from. Someone from Tega Cay may consider Columbia to be hell on earth while someone from Florence or Sumter may consider it a step up....lol
Than being said, South Carolina is not unlike the rest of the SE in that is more violent. I would not say that it's anymore dangerous then othere cities in the general area...
Gangs are everywhere and if he wants to find it he will. I agree with others in as it takes more than just moving him to another city. He needs strong family support and intervention. That said I'm sure the gang problem here is less than that in DC but it also would depend where your sister lives as to how much you would see.
The Columbia Police Department and the Richland and Lexington County sheriffs' departments have got your back.

To tell you the truth, I don't see alot of gang activity anymore like it use to be. It's like they're disappearing somewhat--which is a good thing. WE don't need that type of non-sense. As long as they don't move it up near spring valley, I'm good. Everytime I see these kids wearing this crap, I shake my head. Been around that type of environment before. Got out of it at 16 and changed my life for the better. Although, I'd watch out near the inner-city area, a place I don't visit too often. Just hate the fact that everytime I go to the city, some guy/woman is asking for money.

Im thinkin to sending my boy to stay with his aunt in Columbia. Hes in to terrible trouble now here. My sista saying maybe it not a good idea for him to stay in Columbia cause she live there and she say Columbia full of gangs and that is why he gots trouble now. If I send him to stay is there safe highschool in the city that not be full of gangs? There are gangs everplace in DC here and not safe for my son. Will he be safe when he stay in Columbia?
The police haven't said yet if this was gang related, but anytime 8 teenagers brutally beat up one person, it's a good bet gang activity was involved. You may want to think twice about moving your son to Columbia.

True. The Upstate might have some openings for king pins in their fledgling gang industry, so why bother with Columbia?
