My family is relocating to the Columbia area from California. My husband is black/sicilian but appears to be hispanic and I am white. One of our children looks white with reddish hair and our other child looks like a tan white boy who sometimes passes for Mexican. He will be starting Kindergarten next year. How are mixed families viewed in the Columbia area? and what areas should we be concentrating our efforts to find housing? and what areas should we avoid?

One other question, my husband is a volunteer firefighter and would like to continue volunteering. His job would be in Columbia.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Columbia is a very diverse city so I doubt you will have any problems. Richland County is more diverse and liberal than the other counties in the metro. I don't know if there are any volunteer fire departments left in Richland County since the city and county consolidated the fire departments. I know there are some in outlying counties.
