For what it's worth, the last time my wife had to fly to St Louis (a couple weeks ago), it was actually cheaper for her to fly out of CAE vs. CLT. Prices are definitely lower than I remember them being for the past couple years.
Columbia Metropolian Airport might overtake Myrtle Beach International Airport as the the 3rd busiest airport in South Carolina this year due to the SHARP decline in passenger numbers in Myrtle Beach.
Had to laugh when I saw GSP's billboard claiming "Why fly Charlotte when there is GSP". The short answer is DIRECT flights at any time of day. Dave Edwards at GSP must have excess advertising budget to burn with that silly ad. Comparing GSP's limited traffic to an airport with over 700 flights per day takes a pair.
I agree with the premise of the story, even if Columbia is $20 higher per ticket, just the price of gas driving to Charlotte makes no economic sense. Unless there is a compelling reason to drive 80 miles like direct flights or material price differences, there is little reason not to use CAE.

What does any of this have to do with Columbia's airport? Did I click on the wrong thread?

If you click on the WIS link, the first 20 seconds related to a billboard in Columbia about GSP. The billboard (I think on Blossom St) in effect asks the question about why use Charlotte when GSP has what you need. I give it to GSP, they have a pair to put up that billboard after the SWA mess and then to compare with Charlotte, are you kidding??????? Does Dave Edwards understand how many DIRECT flights Charlotte has and that GSP does not have???? I guess it is ego, there is absolutely no other logical reason for garbage like that. Besides, anyone in Columbia or any city who does not fly out of the local airport would be have to be drunk to pass up direct flights if costs are materially similar.
OK people. I have received an invitation to a wedding in Nashville, TN on Sat., Nov. 10. I am planning on flying out on Fri. Nov 9 and returning Sun, Nov. 11. I am going online now to price going out of Columbia or Charlotte. Be back soon.
OK, back.
Quick check on Travelocity.
Col to Nash, one stop, $326.00
Char to Nash, no stops, $271.00
For $55.00 difference, wife picks me up and drops me off at airport, no parking issues, less gas, time savings, etc., I will use Columbia Airport.
Last year, paying for two from Boston it was over a $250.0 savings from Bos to Char then Bos to Col. $100 savings would not be worth me driving there and back to get them and return them. $250.00 was worth it.
The question is, at what point would one consider it enough of a cost difference to make it worth it?

The beauty of CAE and pride make me use it without even looking elsewhere. If everyone did as I do, airlines would follow. Let's say the difference is $150. That $150 is money well spent just to use CAE. Flying over Columbia, touching down in Columbia and driving into Columbia from CAE are the ultimate to me when I get back from a trip. I love Columbia. Get with it, Columbians. That's how other airports got more service: the locals think their city is the be all and end all of the world and they use their airport. Like I said, get with it Columbians.

I agree - I have to save a fortune to fly out of another airport and I rarely save enough to make it worthwhile.
The "hassle" factor is also low at CAE... CLT for a large airport also has a low hassle factor when compared with ATL. Everyone has to weigh their own pros and cons.. though..some people will be determined to go to CLT, GSP, or wherever in search of a lower fare. I have friends that have flown out of CLT and CHS to avoid paying higher fares Columbia . For them it was worth it because they turned them into extensions of their trips by spending a few hours or in the case of Charleston.. over night to take in sights, eat at a nice restaurant... etc...though they ended up spending more money over all by doing so than just flying out of CAE.. Somehow they felt they were getting more for their money doing it this way........oh well to each their own...
