But I'm all for connecting Sumter to the metro but it's simply too far from the airport for a name change. I wouldn't mind seeing them get a seat though.

Metropolitan vs Regional- I guess I can see your point

I'm a Sumter native and although I have always felt like Sumter is firmly in the Midlands and connected to Columbia's economy, the connection between Sumter and Bishopville and particularly Manning is incredibly strong, much stronger than Sumter and Columbia. The history, culture, and geography of Sumter-Lee-Clarendon counties really tie Sumter to those places in a way that Sumter isn't tied to Columbia. It's hard to put into words, but as someone from the area, I just know that's how it is.

I can see both sides of the argument about putting Sumter on the airport board. Sumter would definitely benefit if CAE grew and developed better air service, but the people in Sumter I know also don't mind driving to Myrtle Beach, Charleston, or even Charlotte for a flight if it's cheaper. They already have to drive an hour to CAE, so paying more to fly out of CAE because of convenience doesn't apply because it's already not super convenient. This is anecdotal, for sure - just my experience.

I don't see the benefit of putting Sumter's name on the airport. Sumter and Columbia aren't peer cities the way Greenville and Spartanburg or Raleigh and Durham are. It would be like the Charlotte changing its name to Charlotte-Gastonia International Airport. If anything, adding Sumter to the airport name diminishes Columbia's brand while doing little improve Sumter's. I don't see a value-add for either city that makes it worthwhile.

I would do Columbia International. I mean why not? Everybody else has. Columbia is probably one of the largest metros to not have "international" in the name. Though I agree, I dont see anything wrong with Metropolitan.

Sounds kind of dated, but its the fares that matter, not the namesake.

I have always wondered this myself and think it would be a beneficial name change and also curious as to why they never decided to do that when Myrtle Beach and GSP did it.

I think Detroit's airport is Metro as well and kind of think that Metro sounds better than Regional (think Asheville Regional, Florence Regional, or Augusta Regional) but still think they should have or should now go ahead and change the name. I'm sure they have some sort of international flights taking off from there.

Ii order to get the "international" designation you need to have flights to/from international destinations which also requires a Homeland Security presence with customs and immigration. It's no longer an easy fix given the governmental cost and oversight needed so wouldn't see that happening anytime soon with CAE. In all likelihood the international addition will probably take place if/when international charter companies (versus standard carriers) see it as a lucrative location and market to fly in/out of and would say the odds are quite long with Charlotte lacking in varying international destinations as it currently stands.

Columbia has all the requirements to meet a name designation of international it just chooses not to have the name.
