Where can I find volunteer opportunities that are less laid-back? (Columbia: appointed, activities)

Hello all --

I'm interested in finding some volunteer activities in Columbia. Does anyone know where I might look?

A caveat, which seems to be uncommon. I've noticed that many volunteer opportunities are very laid back, with a lot of volunteers and seemingly a small amount of actual work. I have friends who enjoy these but I'm more of an introvert and don't much enjoy the small talk -- I'm most comfortable when immediately put to work.

Some of my strengths/interests are science and math, teaching, the outdoors, working with children, and working with my hands. I contacted the local Habitat for Humanity branch, but it doesn't really seem that they have many build opportunities for individual volunteers. I also tried to get in touch with EdVenture but we got our signals crossed and nothing happened.

Can anyone suggest organizations that could use an extra pair of hands?

If you like working with children, here is a way you can do that and be of tremendous service to them and your community. Advocating for children in foster care is it's mission and passion.
