I am looking into going to Columbia, SC soon to start my business up formally. I have been in Augusta, Georgia trying to get customers and such and many of the businesses can barely stay above water, much less even need a marketeer because they are so small and unable to reach the economy of scale needed for the division of labor... Well back to the point.

I am looking for strong, young businesses in emerging services sectors themselves to market, they are doing the best and every time I visit Columbia, I see the power of the Capital, USC and a very beautiful aesthetic city. I was absolutely stunned to see a collection of medieval paintings at the art museum on Main, the traffic flow is strong and the model of car is very new on average. The financial services sector is complete in the wheel of services possible to offer on Earth pretty much and in depth areas for many subsectors.

I want to move Downtown and be in the scene of professionals. I am ready to try and roll the dice and go here and shake the field up some. Columbia is very similar to Augusta, I am not really worried about crime and such.

I also secretly want to party with a lot of the girls at USC, so living and working close to there is a must.... Ummmm.... thats about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I had my doubts when first reading your post. It sounded like Marketing 101. At least the getting laid regular is part of it so there might be real life hope for you........LOL

I will say as someone who works in marketing, the city really is a great place for it, a lot of start ups and strong creative class here. But with that being said, I will also say that there are already a ton of agencies here some small some large, etc. Though there are more businesses here that are thriving, there is much more competition in the marketing field here than in Augusta and it is a tough market to break into if you don't know the right people. I certainly don't want to discourage you at all and your dead on the money, this is an awesome city but just make sure your company can find its niche amongst the others here and if you do that, you should be good.

Best of luck man!

@Accufitgolf- Lol

@ColaClemsonFan11- I do plan on doing a niche. Eventually want to do Japanese/American (mainly Japanese manufacturers with no American marketeers) manufacturing companies. I have already worked with some of them and there is a huge field in making marketing plans and consulting them and such.

Columbia has a strong small business class that is my usual customer now. I do pretty much everything right now, from SEO, Website creation to store display and straight consulting (talking on a phone).

I hope more people respond today.

Oh nice, I would say that would be a good niche market for Columbia. I'm not very aware of a whole lot of marketing firms here that focus on that so that would be pretty good here, especially if you know that market.

I was just employed by a marketing firm and can tell you that there is only competition within the direct marketing field. A lot of "marketing firms" around here are really just schemes to employ door to door sales, or business to business sales. so what you're starting up could be a good fit!

Thats true, I got caught in an interview with one of those places after I graduated and was looking for a job, they said it was for a Marketing and Promotions Specialist....so I went in for the interview and they take me out and show me one of their "promotional events" they had that day and it was just them standing outside of a gas station trying to get people to buy window cleaner or something stupid....decided to pass on that job and then felt dumb for going to the interview LOL!

I can definitely concur with the people talking about a large majority of the marketing firms in Columbia ending up being just door-to-door sales. I've been trying hard to find a marketing job in Columbia over the last year or so and have run into pretty much nothing but what were essentially scams or at the least misleading. They really make it hard to find a real job when they flood all of the job sites with their same listings that all sound about the same.

Best of luck in Columbia! It really is a great city. Loved it when living there in college.

I learned to avoid anything that says "Marketing and Sales" or "Entry Level Marketing" those usually mean "scam". Your best bet is to go to SCIWAY.NET and go to advertising or marketing firms and click through to all of their sites and see if they have any openings or submit a resume through there. I found that most firms dont really post jobs but they always accept resumes and just sort of see if anyone catches their eye. You may have already done this, but if you haven't I would definitely give it a shot because your right those scam folks are all over the job sites!

Confused by your term "marketeer". Should I read that as "marketer" or is there really such a thing as a "marketeer"? What kind of marketing do you do? Internet? Direct mail?
