I'm still not understanding how an attorney of all people expects to get away with not filing tax returns at all. What did he think was going to happen?

I'm still wondering where the undeclared income came from. That information might be yet to come in this saga. That city council seat might finally be in better hands.

@Bouje2 We're not talking about sophisticated criminals just another giant-ego politician thinking they're above the law.

That is why I think its the beginning of the story and not the end....No wonder Newman didn't run for his seat with this looming.. It would have came out during the campaign and ruined it..or.. had he managed to get in people would be calling for him to step down now or the press would hound him until he decied to leave. (He saw the writing on the wall and decided to bow out)

Actually I would have expected some sophistication from an attorney. I would have expected the income to be understated but a return to have been filed.

I agree. Not only do attorneys understand these types of things, they understand the consequences and have a lot of to lose if caught. It is very likely Mr. Newman will be disbarred and lose his career, perhaps permanently.

I had a discussion with someone in "the know" and he said while the charges have nothing to do with the penny sales tax, it is just the first shoe to drop. He said this issue will not be directly stealing from the penny tax fund but the unclaimed money derived from helping it pass and at worst, directing where the money went since past. Like an agency hiring a "specific consultant" to be sure it got its "fair share" versus thievery. Some might say a "bribe".

He said the major audit issue of the penny tax will simply be incompetent bureaucrats not properly tracking/auditing it, not thievery.

Like hiring the "right electrician" to be sure a municipality will allow the rewiring/changing of a business sign when the sign does not meet present zoning requirements and without the "right electrician", no "changes" to the sign would be approved. While not in SC, been there, done that. I leave it up to you to decide if this is "bribe".

The State newspaper has an article titled Richland May Drop These Projects From Penny Tax List or something to that effect. Would someone please read it and tell me which projects they might drop? Thanks.
