Hello, I am relatively new to the Columbia area and my husband and I are considering a rental for my mother-in-law in Denny Terrace. I did a few drive by's and the area seems pretty mellow. Is this a safe neighborhood? I noticed the police sub-station a few streets away. Should I be concerned?

I've never lived there but you might want to look around a bit more.

Denny Terrace neighborhood hoping for return of sense of security - WIS News 10 - Columbia, South Carolina |

Why don't you call the police department and ask them about crime in the area? Better safe than sorry.

I believe Denny Terr. is in the County.. so Richland Sheriff's Office would be the appropriate LE agency. Denny T used to have kinda of a bad reputation as many of the neighborhoods along Monticello Rd have had over the years particuliarly... in the County. Things may be better now, in part, because of the annex that you mentioned.

The problem with some of the older subdivisions north of I-20 and between Farrow Rd and the river is that many are isolated and off of the beaten path. All it takes is for one bad element or bad actors to take root in it and, as in any neighborhood, they can go down quickly. Many of these bad actors are drawn to these communities because they are off of the beaten path, cheaper rents, and have limited access often one way in and one way out so who comes in and out can be monitored. Hollywood Hills is one nearby area that has had some problems but is similiar to Denny Terrance in some ways....

Though I know this post is a couple of years old and the writer has probably already found a place for his mother to live. BUT, I felt it important to respond to those interested in learning more about our community of Denny Terrace. I was born in this neighborhood 66 years ago. Moved away for quite a while and returned in 1993. Though little has changed in this Richland County community over the years, it remains a quiet (for the most part!) "bedroom community" for Columbia residents and home to many people affiliated with Columbia International University. Students, faculty and staff all call Denny Terrace "home" and add to the livability of this suburban neighborhood. A community built in the early 1940s, the homes are mostly two and three-bedroom bungalows on 100 x 200-foot lots. We are on the City of Columbia's water lines, but have no sewer service. Water is moved through a series of ditches rather than in-ground drainage. Most residents of Denny Terrace are home-owners, though rental properties abound, especially to accommodate CIU and students. With many families and children in the area, the neighborhood is filled with walkers and bicyclers. There are three small churches in Denny Terrace: Baptist, Methodist and Lutheran. The community center was the former elementary school that served the area. North Columbia is most deficit in public schools, and many of our residents home school or send their children to Ben Lippen or to other districts. The closest elementary school is Forest Heights which is a year-round school in Richland District I. Nonetheless, empty nesters find this community inviting and safe. Like any suburban community, there is minor crime in The Terrace. Mostly property crime. As a member and officer of the Denny Terrace Neighborhood Association, I will tell you that our relationship with the Richland County Sheriff's Department is outstanding and has helped us monitor and stifle criminal activity in the area. Though not crime free, we are a tight-knit neighborhood and look out for each other. We believe that Denny Terrace is a great place to live, raise a family and enjoy your golden years!

Becky , I saw your post and wanted to know if you know how to get some help finding a property in Denny Terrace . My grandson and his wife just graduated from USC and are looking for a starter home in the area to rent or buy . Do you know of any properties currently available that would be good for them . They called about one and as soon as they called , they were too late .I imagine the good ones get gone quickly . They are both working now and I live in Spartanburg or I could be looking myself daily . I guess my question is , who should they contact and where should They look ! Thank you for any help you can offer . These 2 would be great neighbors in Denny Terrace .
