Voters in the 16-county River Valley Region, which includes Muscogee and Harris Counties, have passed the TSPLOST, a 10-year, 1 percent transportation special purpose local option sales tax that will raise an estimated close to $260 million for infrastructure projects in Columbus. The tax will be enacted for 10 years, or until the money for the projects is raised, whichever comes first.

In Columbus, voters favored the tax by a count of 13,801 to 12,474, or about 53 percent to 47 percent. With 15 of the region's 16 counties reporting results early Wednesday morning, the tax had passed by a vote of 29,846 to 25,135, or about 54 percent to 46 percent.

Of the 24 projects on the River Valley Region’s list, a third of them are in Muscogee County. Muscogee’s eight projects range from connecting the north and south sections of the Riverwalk to addressing the infamous “spiderweb intersection on Buena Vista Road.

While I am not in favor of any new taxes, I am kind of glad this one passed. This is good for Columbus as long as the money and the projects come to fruition. Only time will tell.

I would rather see that money used for something else. The riverwalk is nice enough. It spans like 14 miles or something so that is plenty. Use that money to widen other roads on the northside.

That's one of the projects.

That has needed to be done for years. With all of the neighborhoods under construction that way, traffic has increased significantly. Hopefully something will start soon. There is just too much going on up toward Harris County.

Now I know majority of the people that post in here mostly choose to talk about just the northside of town or Downtown etc, but personally I feel the roads in parts of south and east Columbus should be widened first for obvious reasons but i won't get into that. And I know I might irritate some people with my statement but I stand by it the fact of the matter is while people keeping building up the northside which I can't knock progress but it seems the powers that be and most of the population it seems forgets about the areas already established that have been dyin' that could use some help more so than the Northside at this point but that's just how I see it.
