Dollar Tree is an actual dollar store, but Dollar General is not. Even though Dollar General has the word “dollar” in its name, everything in the store doesn’t go for a buck; their merchandise is just low priced. I can’t help but laugh at all of the negative comments about this nice new building replacing the run down feed store and metal building dealer...

I guess so. I just wish we could see something else put in that location that isn’t already so saturated in the market (aka Dollar General).

I saw this a couple months ago. This is the 15th one in the city of Columbus. That’s just ridiculous.

COLUMBUS, GA: Traveling to any part of Columbus or Phenix City will guarantee you see two things a Waffle House and a Dollar General. Dollar General continues to grow its presence in the Columbus market as the Tennessee-based chain has began construction on its 15th store location in the city of Columbus.

Land has been cleared at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Grey Rock Road in North Columbus. The area is just south of the Harris County line. The land will soon give way to a new Dollar General store, which will mark the 15th location for the Goodlettsville, TN-based discount retailer.

Dollar General is no stranger to the Columbus market. The first store opened on Macon Road in the Eastgate Plaza Shopping Center near University Avenue in the early 1990's.The chain has now grown to over a dozen stores in Columbus. Across the Chattahoochee in Phenix City there are an additional 12 locations scattered between Phenix City, Fort Mitchell, Smiths Station, and Crawford.

No timeline has yet been released for when the new store will open. Although crews from Teramore Development LLC. have been quickly working to get land clear in the area in preparation of construction of the new Dollar General store.

Construction Begins On 15th Dollar General Store In Columbus

I couldn’t agree more. The fact that the only development in new business in the area is a rehash of a store that has 15 locations makes our city look like it lacks confidence in bringing new economic opportunities to better serve its people.

Don't support these stores. Hopefully some will close.

So you believe empty buildings and lost jobs are better than having a Dollar Store?

There is always a higher and better use for these locations. They also don’t employ many people and pay low wages. So yes to answer your question.

To be fair, though, hasn't the fact been discussed on here in the past that outside corporations tend to look at demographic factors (with median income and population density being two of the most significant) when determining whether they want to locate in a certain area?

In other words, as has been said on here before (as well as discussed in articles published by the LE), the issue seems to be with the fact that Columbus already has one of the lowest median incomes as compared to other mid-sized cities, so the area seems to be dealing with a catch-22 situation of sorts whereby the majority of companies willing to consider locating here are those that pay low wages and have a business modality of locating in relatively low-income areas. It's a catch-22 because with every additional company that locates here that pays low wages and which is in the business of selling products geared towards lower-income markets, it further entrenches the area in the demographic classification of being a low-income community.

This is why I've said before (and this is just my opinion, of course) that I personally think it's going to be very difficult for the Columbus area to make progress in the ways people are hoping to see until companies start locating here that pay legitimate living wages (i.e., no more $15k-$21k hourly wage jobs in the retail, restaurant, service, etc. sectors).

I'm actually surprised a gas station didn't go in there, seems like a good place for one.

The demographics in the newest DG's location certainly isn't low income. That's solidly a middle class to upper middle class area these days.

I wonder if they moved on this spot after the Family Dollar got the old Walgreen's spot on Veterans and Fortson, basically leapfrogged them to the north.

Either way these stores are popping up everywhere in the country, it's not just a Columbus area thing at all. People shop at them, apparently a lot.

Jersey Mike’s Subs is going in the St. Francis shopping center in the space Starbucks vacated for a free standing location across the street.
