So you'll need to be in Mansfield daily and Athens 1-2 times a week? I was a bit confused by your posting. If so, you might just need to stay near Mansfield and make the commute when necessary. If you're looking for a midway point, the eastern suburbs of Columbus like Reynoldsburg or Pickerington would work, though that would be a long haul for an everyday commute. Athens itself is a fun town, but the area outside of it is pretty depressed Appalachia so you may be competing with students for housing unless it's offseason.

Yeah, this will be quite the haul. This would be about the worst I've heard of in Columbus.
OP, will you be working every day? M-F? If so you'll want to be a little closer to Mansfield. Perhaps the Polaris or Crosswoods areas. If you'll be splitting your time equally you'll obviously want to be right in the middle. Right in the middle would be downtown Columbus. Can you afford this?
Also, what is your doctoral program? Ohio University has a campus in Dublin that offers 7 different post-graduate degrees.
