I was printing out pictures, and I had to put them and format the layout in a word processor. Tried MS Word 2010 and it turned out TERRIBLE for printing pictures! I couldn't resize pictures well and I couldn't move them around the page! I thought Word 2010 would be great but they put it a step back! The older version 2003 was better for pictures!
Then I tried Open Office Writer and it was perfect. Easily resized and positioned my photos!
Any of you compare Office 2010 and Open Office? What other comparisons have you found?
Do not like OpenOffice, at least for their Calc program.. Excel is FAR better imho, and that is the main office program I use along with Outlook. Their writer program is fine though.
Open Office is fine for basic work which is what most people only need especially for home use then it makes more sense to use Open Office as its free but for more complicated and in depth tasks Office 2010 fits the bill. I used Open Office when at Uni on my personal computer but found that at times I would have to use Office software on the University computers.
Not sure why the OP was using Word to layout photos for printing. Word 2003 I suppose might have been better for this because 7-8 years ago there were not many photo editors other than Photoshop ($$$).
I would use something like the free Picasa to layout photos for printing.
Word is just not the right tool.
I just changed from Office 2007 to Office 2010 and am very happy with it. It didn't really change that much except for Outlook.
And I thought Office 2007 was HUGE improvement over 2003 - though the ribbon bar took some time to adjust to.

I agree, OOo is fine for basic work. When I was in college, I saw only a few complex office files that wouldn't have worked right in OOo.
It comes down to the Linux vs Windows debate. Both have their pros and cons, but in the end, MS still makes the better product and I hate admitting that.
OOo continues to improve though. I think its flaw is that it needs Java. Since Oracle bought Sun, I wouldn't be surprised if another organization takes over development Java-free and make it even better.

Many believe Oracle bought Sun to gain control of Java. It is more valuable than Solaris or Sun hardware in terms of impact to IT.
OO is adequate. It gets better over time. But MS is not standing still either. And Office 2010 is definitely better than Office 2007, without much of a new learning curve.
OO is not completely compatible with Office files. I have seen first hand that OO handles blank values in Excel cells differently. So if you use OO for spreadsheets - be a bit careful before you assume an XLS file is perfectly OK.

Yep MS Office 2010 is a real nice product overall, I would be happy to use Open office on my personal computer as I only do basic work on it now but I recently bought a new laptop that came with Office 2010 well it came with a deal otherwise I wouldn’t pay for Office 2010 as I have no need to use all the features at home.
I had some responsiveness issues that were interesting.
I haven't had any issues on W7 64bit with OO. I use it for basic word processing and spreadsheets with some simple equations, but haven't had any kind of response issues.
