Newegg

Once again I am flabbergasted. You all remember the old hard drive ad that was posted here recently?

I just bought 1TB for around $55, and it was external USB too.

Moore's Law continues.

Yep, gettin' cheap.

My first HD was a full height 30MB drive that used RLL encoding that I had (along with a whopping 1MB of RAM) in my 8MHz XT. That was around 1991 or so. The cellphone I have today is 128x faster than that machine, has 1,000x the RAM and 273x the storage capacity.

It really is amazing how quickly the technology evolves.

I like the reviews of the Samsung drives on NewEgg.

A lot fewer DOAs than so many other large drives.

It's only a matter of time.

My first PC I used was a TRS 80 Model I, then a couple C64s, then a compaq portable. 4.77 MHz with 256K RAM which I expanded to 640K RAM no hard drive. I then added a 20 meg hard drive. this was maybe 1985 or so.

In the big picture, it's a good thing. From a hot shopping deal standpoint, it's just so-so.

About 3 months ago, I picked up a 1.5TB EXTERNAL drive for this price, so I'm not completely bowled over by seeing a 2TB INTERNAL this low. Also, since 3 TB drives were introduced just a few weeks ago, it's reasonable to expect the price to come down on the 2 TB drives.

I remember when my employer paid for $5,000 for a 9 GB SCSI external hard drive in the early 90s. And they were thrilled to do it, because $5,000 was the going price for a 3 GB drive 6 months earlier.

All good points.

But, I have a ReadyNAS Duo that tops out at 2TB/drive, and this has some appeal.
Of course, I don't ahve an emergency and prices are only moving in one direction on drives.
