I stopped doing this about 8 years ago when I turned 25. It's like cooking dinner for your family every night. A thankless job that everybody takes for granted.
I've been out of "the game" for a long time but my perception is that with the move to laptops there's a lot less DIY fixes for hardware problems. I also think that Windows has gotten a lot better from XP through Windows 7 so software issues should be much less prevelant. Viruses and spyware are probably just as common as ever. Laptops have gotten so cheap that it doesn't make sense to spend much money trying to fix problems. The free cloud backup services are a blessing.
