I have owned an older Mac G4 for 5 years. Everything works fine, but...
About 4 years ago I rented DVD movies to watch on the Mac without problems. In the last months, when I insert a DVD movie, no desktop icon appears and the drawer opens. I've cleaned the DVD and still the same thing. This does not happen all the time.
This week I rented two DVDs and watched one each evening. This evening I inserted a DVD, same problem. I inserted the one I watched last night (without problems) and it also had no icon on the desktop, the drawer opened.
What could be the problem? Why the inconsistency?
Does the same apparatus read DVDs and CDs? If I bought a cleaning kit for the CDs, would that also clear up the problem for the DVDs?
I'd appreciate all tips and advice.

Wow! Still using a G4? Anyway, why don't you get your hands on an older external DVD player? Does your G4 has a Firewire port on the back?

Does it happen with CD-ROMs and music CD's too, or just with DVD's?

All optical drives - after a while the system wears out and gets out of whack.

However replacing a laser is very cheap if you know how, I recently fixed the one in my £800 CD player for £18.

Why? If the OP still wants to use such an old computer, he could buy an external DVD drive for around $49.00

you could probably get a new internal one for that, but still I think its time for a new mac. G4's are what 10/11 years old? I started on G3's- I remember when 32mb of RAM and a 6GB HDD where huge! Those were the days. I miss my old iMac but i'm not sure what use it would be these days. I doubt it could even play youtube videos.
