Strange problem that just started over the weekend on my home PC with XP Professional.
I go to control panel, internet options, select delete, then select delete browsing history. Box opens with the green squares moving left to right. It just keeps running and running and doesn't delete anything. The only way to shut it down is by Windows Task Manager.
If I click settings instead of delete, then click view files, the box grays and no immediate response. After a minute or so, the files open.
Only changes made in the past week are;
a new Netgear wireless router
opened then closed a Roku account an hour later
and a possible update from IE7 to IE8. Wife uses IE sometimes. Not sure about that one though.
No other problems noticed (yet). I've ran AVG, Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware (all up to date free versions) with just the usual cookies showing up.
Downloaded CCleaner and ran it. It cleared the temp files. Clearing still doesn't work through the control panel.
One other thing. While it's attempting to delete the temp files, if I press cancel, the wording in the box disappears but the green squares continue left to right until I shut it down with Task Manager.
You might try running recovery from the XP CD. I'll be honest and tell you it's been long enough since I ran it that I can't give you a step-by-step. Once there I think you run chkdsk with /r/p. Only one switch is required, but I could never remember which one so I always put both. the program will tell you that one of the switches is inherent in the other and ignore the one not needed. It will compare system files and replace any damaged ones.
