Giving a minor unlimited access to the internet is the same as/or worse then dropping them off at a porn shop.

So it's OK for a son to have a webcam, but not a daughter? Yeesh. I had one in high school, so did the girl I was dating. Yeah, the expected happened over it, and the world didn't end.

That said, if you're worried about your kids spending more time in front of a game console or a computer, that's more of how they're raised than whats available. My cousin has all their computers in the living room, and her kids still don't want to go outside - they'd much rather sit in front of the TV or with a DS in their hand. I had a gaming PC in my room plus a Playstation, and I can probably count on both my hands the number of times it got turned on. The PC got used more, for school and for the games I picked up for it. I still preferred to stay outside and with friends, because that's how I was raised. It was nothing for my parents to boot me out the door on a Saturday morning and I didn't come back in until after dark.

To me, computers in the kids room is fine, so long as they don't live on the thing. That's completely up to the parent. So far, experience has shown me that every parent/parents I've known, now and when I was growing up, who have tried to control every facet of their kids lives wound up with that kid rebelling against them just as much.

And a desktop makes a good P2P server.

The suggestions I made were not about control. I don't look over their shoulder at what they do. I just won't let them have it in their room. My oldest is 18 soon. I now allow her to take it in her room if she wants. She's not rebelling in any way.

Haha, I just asked a question as to why parents were so against computers in the kids room (replying to someone who made the comment, and while answering the OP). I still haven't seen an answer either!
