I still have a box in the basement running Windows 95 OSR2. The original Win95 retail release wasn't quite as good, but starting with OSR2 you got FAT32 support, and the system was somewhat more stable, at least in my experience.
The Win95 desktop was a much needed change, I think, as was the additional of dial-up TCP/IP networking so Windows folks could use real ISPs.

Those were great advancements but overall the whole Win9x line had severe stability issues. I switched from Win95 to NT4 in about 1997 because I was so sick of the lockups and BSoD's.
Windows 8, IMO seems like a "horizontal" upgrade, er...or "side-grade." Its not bad, just not what I want.
There's only a few things like native ISO support and maybe some of the sync things, but the difference isn't big enough for me to pay for that's for sure.
Doesn't to me either, but apparently this Compaq was specifically built for ME - he said he had the top people at his company try to change it but it wouldn't work....
Why is that the case? You can't boot with another OS's installation disk?
After all this time, I honestly don't remember - I still have the computer (use it as a DVD player) - I "think" I tried it with an emergency boot disk I'd gotten - not sure if I actually even have an installation disk. He told me his IT people had work had tried everything and nothing worked (that didn't stop him from not wanting to take it back and give me $$ back - sadly, it was the end of our relationship and there aren't that many family members)

There's no such thing as a PC specifically built for any version of Windows. Now maybe they couldn't find a driver for something like the video or Ethernet for whatever OS they were trying to install on it. But that doesn't mean the system was built for only WinME. I've seen a lot of "IT people" who couldn't do the simplest things.
Was that long ago? It does not seem like it. It crashed a lot so we stuck with DOS until some later editions of windows. I cannto remember when we switched over.
When I had 98 I loved that shell. I had some old really fun and useful programs I could still run that way. Cosmo was sooo fun to play, even if I was terrible at it.
Mike, I often disagree with you on the religious thread--and I do here as well--- a thousand dollars is not nearly enough to get me to upgrade to Windows 8!!!
Is it just my imagination, or does it appear that every other operating system upgrade by Microsoft just plain sucks? XP, okay; Vista, crap; Seven, okay; Eight, crap. Not sure how far back that goes, but I'm sure you operating system junkies know the history.
Back when they did DOS, one knew to run screaming from anything short of version3. Especially 0. You didn't want a free trial. Microsoft uses the public to do their main debugging and I believe it was version 2 which randomly erased hard drives. They frequently offered 'free upgrades' to unsuspecting innocents.
I am happy to have 98, XT or 7 on any computer. All of the others have given me problems with crashes, incompatability, and other things. However I have not used 8. In fact, it is unlikely i ever will.
I have two older laptops which sort of work I kept with an eye to having them fixed and using them for writing.
One is xp. One is 98. I had a vista machine but it was stolen. The drugged out jerk had probably smashed it as soon as the internet went away (see drugged out) due to me unplugging the modem. Only sad thing about that is I hadn't recently backed up my story files. Even getting the word processor working right was complicated. It may have had a Vista glitch and he couldn't cope.
How many heavily discounted 8 machines go straight to ye old computer repair to have 8 removed and 7 installed?
