Microsoft is releasing a new Surface tablet on Oct. 22 with Windows 8 RT. The previous Surface had just Windows 8. What's supposed to be cool about Windows 8 RT anyway? I'm pretty sure they will not add a Start button.

I read some articles about the new Surface and it seems the advantages are mostly for techies. If MS wants to win people over to their tablets, they should make the OS more like Windows7.

Also PC sales declined in the past six months. Mostly because people hated Windows 8; also, tablets are getting more popular, and in two years, tablets will be selling more than computers, I have read.

Windows 8 vs Windows RT: what's the difference? | News | TechRadar

Quote:
Windows RT vs Windows 8: software and compatibility

There's a big difference here: Windows RT comes with Office preinstalled, and Windows 8/Pro doesn't. However, Windows 8/Pro are compatible with existing Windows programs and Windows RT isn't. Windows RT apps must use the Microsoft-style interface, although Windows 8 programs can use the traditional Windows desktop too.

Windows RT also restricts what APIs (application programming interfaces) developers can use, especially for web browsers. As Mozilla's Harvey Anderson puts it, "only Internet Explorer will be able to perform many of the advanced computing functions vital to modern browsers in terms of speed, stability, and security to which users have grown accustomed."

The iPad outsells the Surface 50:1. Maybe the whole thing has to do with the way MS advertises the thing? I am certain that it's a great tablet, but having Windows 8 on it may have killed it. The TV adds are plain weird, and having all those "tiles" covering the screen edge to edge puts people off (?) A better idea would have been for MS to create an OS for it, not just Windows 8.

Agreed on the ads.

Apple's marketing is much much better than MSFT's.
Apple engages people. MSFT is just slick and/or snarky.

You're confused.

Surface tablets all came with RT (cannot run legacy Windows programs, only the new apps). Only Surface Pro tablets came will a fully fledged Windows. So you have the original Surface tablets: Surface RT and Surface Pro

The new line of Surface tablets, "Surface 2" have hardware improvements. Again, they will come in RT and Pro versions

On the software side of things, Microsoft will release the Windows 8.1 update on 17 October, bringing back the Start Menu.

I don't think it's marketing. The Surface is even more overpriced than the iPad is. It cost more than people are willing to pay.

You're confused. The "Start Button" they are bringing back is nothing at all like the Windows7 Start Button. All it does is flip you into the Modern UI. Like the Windows key does now.
