If you really think it's malware, the best solution I've found is Hitman Pro. It's knocked out the last two things that slipped past my defenses.

well you said things ran fine before the recent update.

if so windows creates restore points before updating.

simply restore to the last known good point ( i guess before the updates.)

Run virus scan by a bunch of vendors (AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes.org)

once you are satisfied you don't have infections. simply apply one update at a time to see which update is causing issues.

It's kind of a vicious cycle, more people using adblock = less revenue, equating to having to use more ads, which makes more people use adblock, etc.

People don't want to pay for things but they also don't want to be inconvenienced by generating revenue in passive (and sometimes active, if you click them) ways.

If you are still having problems I can try to help. I can get you a bootable AV rescue disk or USB drive to clean the system from outside Windows. A lot of malware isn't cleanable while Windows is up and running. I spent a few years as a system administrator/help desk guy. It's been a few years but I probably remember a few things. Shoot me a PM if you want me to give it a shot.

I think I am just going to reinstall windows. I have a legit copy that I bought when I built the computer.

Last known good configuration worked for about an hour, then reverted to the resource hog version.

Restoring did nothing.
