I may spring for a more expensive, but better antivirus than what I've been using. AVG and AVAST and Norton all have issues and some of the articles I've read say Webroot and BitDefender are actually superior products.
Yes, I have used Bitdefender myself, and I have found it to be pretty good. It detects malware at near-perfect accuracy and has minimal impact on system performance, as evident from the recently independent lab tests. Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton are top-of-the-line antivirus programs that regularly score well in independent lab tests.
About 5 years ago a gnarly virus made it through my free Avast so I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials (Win 7) which did find the virus. Different AV programs probably catch different threats so I am not saying to not use Avast, but that is just my experience.
I am still using MSE and Malwarebytes on my laptop which runs Win 7. On my desktop, Win 10 I use Malwarebytes and Win Defender (standard with Win 10).
I heard BitDefender free version is good too and have tried that out a few times.
I used to use BitDefender. When I reinstalled Win10 on both my tower and my laptop, I never reinstalled it - been using the built in AV ever since. One less app running in the background. That being said, I use my actual computers for very little other than photo editing and gaming.
Personally - I feel asking which AV is best is like asking who makes the best seat-belts or air-bags. No, you don't upgrade or buy seatbelts or airbags after the fact. But my point is that these are tools that you need to have, but they are just one cog in the bigger world of security.
No AV solution is going to keep you 100% secure in the same notion that having a 5-pt harness seatbelt and wrap around curtain airbags isn't going to guarantee that you will not get hurt in any type of crash. You still need a number of other controls. The biggest factor being the human element.
That said - Av-test dot org is a good independent resource for AV solutions.
Also - the big names (often seen in Enterprises) tend to have features that are not necessary/required for the individual user. Thus, just because your organization uses Symantec or McAFee doesn't necessarily mean they do a better job in terms of AV. What they may do better or work better for your organization is in the area of management (deployment, monitor, support, etc.). Or, the company has already invested in other solutions from the same company - so there is some advantage in terms of economies of scale. Company A is already using Symantec for full disk encryption and data loss prevention, so throwing in AV is going to be easier to manage and cheaper than adding a product from another vendor.
