In the old day we bought new computers because stores were selling models with more had hard drive and memory. We have not really seen that many changes in hard drive or memory is almost in decade.
I-7, 8 gigs of ram and hard disc space that is measured in terabytes. This has not really changed in almost a decade.
The computers I bought in 2008-2009.
Actually my "desktop" I assembled. Initially i build a computer up from parts meaning to use at a basic server. I work with computers so this is kinda like work related play around. I needed a machine I could install various software, mostly by Microsoft. After that it became a PC with win 8 on it. The awesome barracuda hard failed so I got a new hard drive and that's how win 8 became to be, I was running server originally.
seagate barracuda hard drive was the best hard drive money could buy back then.
I think I need a video card designed for win 10, then I will convert it to win 10
1st - A fairly old Dell PC with a 19" screen that was given to me by a kind IT professional who mailed it from Texas, The company he worked for cycled them out after about three years, he saw I was having trouble with mine so offered it to me. The discussion about it was taking place on a gardening forum so he said if I had any extra seeds he'd take some in trade. I sent over 100 varieties so he got something out of it. Wouldn't let me pay for it, not even shipping.
That PC came with XP on it, so when support ended I started reading up on Linux and gave it a try. Started out with Ubuntu and ended up also placing Mint on it as a dual boot. These days I just use Mint. I've tried many Linux distros and none have impressed me the way Mint has. Had to replace the hard drive recently and was able to find a refurbished one on Amazon for $19.
2nd - Toshiba laptop with Windows 7, also has Linux Mint 17.2 as a dual boot. Really like the 17.3" screen compared to the ones that are 15.6". My eyes aren't as young or good as they used to be. Sometimes the 17.3" seems too small compared to the 19" on my PC.
I work from home so have to make sure both are capable of working. I've had issues with each one at different times, and if I hadn't had the backup it would have made life very difficult. Matter of fact I need to start thinking about finding a spare because I doubt the PC is going to last that much longer. It has to be at least seven or eight years old. The laptop will need a new battery soon, but could also end up having bigger problems. I've used it a lot over the three plus years I've had it.

Two HP desktops ~~ one still using 7 and one just upgraded to 10; an HP laptop using Vista and a Compaq laptop using XP. One external WD for each desktop. Giving the laptop XP to our fall community electronics recycling drive next month. Also an iPad Air 2.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L750D and a MacBook Pro for work. I replace them every 4-5 years!
